WPLC Public Relations Meeting Minutes: July
7, 2003
Location: Beaver Dam Community Library
Present: Ann Krueger (ESLS), Steve Platterer (MWFLS), Peggy Shaffer
(Lakeshores), Joy Schwarz (Winnefox), Barb Sanford (SCLS), and Linda
Miller.
1. Charge to the committee
Linda Miller reviewed the charge to the committee and why it is of
interest again. The Public Relations Committee is charged with developing
a coordinated public relations effort to promote services to the public
and work with WiLS on developing the public relations campaign.
2. Promoting netLibrary services
SCLS is marketing electronic resources as a bundle, rather than focusing
only on netLibrary. A presentation was given at the schools' continuing
education day on all library services, not just netLibrary.
ESLS is marketing access to netLibrary through their EasiCat online
catalog. They had a campaign in the fall.
Lakeshores has distributed promotional materials produced by netLibrary.
Peggy Shaffer does not recommend continuing to use these materials.
She suggested using the schools to promote the service
to students. Linda will check with WEMA about opportunities to promote
the service.
Winnefox promotes the "privacy" advantage regarding the
use of electronic resources. Joy Schwarz recommended having a seasonal
focus in the PR campaign.
Steve Platterer observed that there is a need to reach library staff
so that they will promote the service. Barb Sanford would like library
staff to be given examples of how to use netLibrary for reference.
Ann Krueger suggested giving staff an example of titles such as what
WRLS did.
Ann commented that the quarterly article should consist of a paragraph
of text with a list of titles available.
Steve suggested creating a training program that can be used for librarian
grade certification. The committee can check with WiLS and Peg Branson
on this.
The committee decided to develop a quarterly article that highlights
a few netLibrary titles. The article will be posted on the WPLC website
as well as the WPLC list. Peggy will provide an article by August 15.
Steve will take the next quarter, due by February 15, and the new SCLS
PR
person will be assigned the next quarter.
3. Promoting the call center and research services
Peggy commented that Racine PL may be interested in survey services,
but the cost would be a big factor.
Ann commented that ESLS could use the service to collect information
needed for grant writing.
Linda will check with Peg Branson regarding informing CE Coordinators
about the program that Josh Morrill has prepared on the survey.
4. WPLC website
The PR Committee recommends that WPLC get its own domain.
5. Next meeting
A meeting will be held during WLA at a time to be set.
