New OverDrive Patron Interface coming soon

Hello colleagues!
Another big change coming to our Digital Library site, this one for the public interface, which will get implemented a few days after the Content Reserve upgrade, scheduled for Feb. 14th, announced in an earlier message today.

Take a look at the short video listed below in the full release from OverDrive, to see the excellent new features, and talk to your library and system webmasters about adding promotional graphics to your local site.

Please let me know if you have questions or comments.

Dear Library Partner,

I am pleased to report that your library’s OverDrive-powered website is scheduled to be migrated to OverDrive’s Next Generation digital library website (see a three minute video) the week of February 18. This will implement “One-Step Checkout,” OverDrive Read (browser-based eBooks), and many search and navigation improvements. This will not require any resources from your library as it uses the same URL and authentication method. Your new website will also carry forward your library’s logo, colors, subject collections, lending policies, and additional features.

Next Generation overview

The new website uses “responsive design” which allows the mobile and desktop experience to be the same—optimized for any size screen regardless of a user’s device.

OverDrive’s Next Generation digital library website also launches OverDrive Read, browser-based eBook reading. OverDrive Read is available for the majority of EPUB eBooks in your collection with no need to purchase an additional format. Next Generation still supports (and provides easier borrowing for) all currently compatible eBook and audio/video devices including Kindle in the US, Android, iPad and Nook. To see a live Next Generation library in action, visit CLEVNET (OH)(http://emedia.clevnet.org).

Implementation steps

Your OverDrive-powered website will be updated and I will notify you at launch. Beginning this week, we will add a ‘Coming Soon’ promotional graphic to your website to provide advanced notice of the switch-over. We’ve also created resources for you to promote that the Next Generation is coming soon:

Folder: Next Gen- Coming Soon

Please note the following:

  • The Next Generation digital library website makes use of web technologies such as HTML 5 and CSS 3, which are not supported by some versions of Internet Explorer. If a user has IE 7 installed,  they will be immediately prompted to complete a one-time install of the Google Chrome Frame plug-in. The plug-in is free and only takes a few seconds to install. Users of IE 8 & 9 will also be prompted to install the plug-in for use of OverDrive Read. Users may switch to another browser such as Firefox, Chrome, or Safari.
  • The responsive website will show on all desktop and mobile modern web browsers. However, users browsing the site within the iOS mobile app will be directed to the existing mobile website with which your users are familiar. We are working to fix this exception as soon as possible.
  • Updated marketing resources are available in the Next Generation Marketing Kit.

I am confident that your library and users will greatly appreciate the innovations of OverDrive’s Next Generation digital library website. We sincerely appreciate your partnership and look forward to making this a great success for your library and community.

Thanks,
Leslie
